Roger
Apéry, 1916-1994: A Radical Mathematician
A chess lover, he would regularly take on the students at the
University of Caen, and in 1966 presided over the newly formed
"Alekhine circle". He was proud a few years later (during a
mathematical meeting at Antwerp) to be the only winner in a
simultaneous match by the champion of the Netherlands.
